New Delhi, September 8 In a bid to address problems faced by Indian workers in general and emigrant women in particular in Gulf countries, the Government is planning to be more focused on missions in the region. A deliberation on these issues and review of various policies related to overseas Indians will be taken up at the annual meeting of mission heads from the region, beginning Monday.

Mission heads of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, Yemen, Libya and Malaysia will take part in the discussions.

The Ministry of External Affairs is in the process of signing labour agreements with the Gulf countries, and such agreements have already been inked with Kuwait and Qatar. The meeting will discuss mechanisms aimed at dealing with Indian workers in a better manner.

The Indian workers in the Gulf constitute about 5 million of the estimated 25 million Indian diaspora. According to estimates of the ministry, about 48 per cent of the Indian workers in the Gulf are in Kuwait and 43 per cent in Saudi Arabia.

The major problem areas of the Indian emigrant women include fraudulent marriages and exploitation they face as housemaids. The ministry has been trying to address these issues with measures such as holding various workshops with the National Commission for Women and state governments. The ministry is now focusing on providing “able legal assistance” besides giving imminent response to these women in need.
