New Delhi, September 15: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday underwent surgery of the prostate gland at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here and is recovering well.

Doctors at the premier institute said the surgery for this “ageing problem” was decided in advance and was not an emergency case. “It is something related to age. While some people can be treated with medicines, in his case surgery was recommended. He is doing fine and will be discharged from the hospital on Monday,” said a senior doctor at AIIMS.

The endoscopic surgery was performed early in the morning by a team of doctors led by Prof N P Gupta, Head of the Department of Urology at AIIMS.

Admitted in the VIP room at the CN Tower, the PM was accompanied by his family members. Director of AIIMS Dr P Venugopal met the PM in the morning after the surgery.
