NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 7: While the CPM downplayed Sonia Gandhi’s remark against opponents of the nuclear deal, others in the Left took strong exception, claiming the Congress was forcing elections on the country.

While CPM general secretary Prakash Karat declined immediate comment, party colleague Sitaram Yechury said Congress had as much right as the Left to articulate its views in public on the issue.

“We have been taking our view on the deal to the people openly. They (Congress) also have a right to do so. Let the people decide. There is nothing to take umbrage over her remarks,” Yechury said.

CPM sources, however, pointed out that a meeting of the politburo may be convened soon if the UPA-Left committee on the deal fails to end the logjam.

Others in the Left reacted angrily to Gandhi’s remarks. “The Congress is going to an election mode. The Congress wants to impose an election on the country. It is the Congress which will be responsible if the governments falls,” CPI general secretary A B Bardhan said.

RSP leader Abani Roy was more direct. “There’s no alternative. We have to pull out. Yes, there is no doubt about it. Because we told them categorically not to go ahead (with the deal). They are going ahead,” he said.
