Mulayam assets: SC reserves verdict

NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 13: The Supreme Court today reserved its verdict on a petition seeking an independent inquiry into the wealth and assets allegedly amassed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members, including his son Akhilesh Singh Yadav.

The Bench comprising Justices A R Lakshmanan and Altamas Kabir reserved its decision to the petition in public interest. The petition has been filed by Congress activist Vishwanath Chaturvedi. Seeking an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the petitioner has alleged Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family for amassing disproportionate assets worth crores by abusing his official position as the chief minister.

Arguing the case for the petitioner, senior advocate K T S Tulsi said, “It’s too important an issue and this court must devise an effective procedure where people do not think they are above law”.

The petitioner claimed to have copies of all the sale deeds of properties that the chief minister and his family have purchased in the last 28 years.
