Indian accused of spiking girlfriend’s drink with abortion pill
New York:: Police in the US state of Wisconsin are looking for a 34-year-old Indian man who allegedly spiked his pregnant girlfriend’s drink with an abortion pill to kill their unborn baby. Manish Patel jumped his $750,000 bail last week, and his attorney says he has not heard from him since December 19. Patel is charged with attempted first-degree homicide of an unborn child, six other felonies and two misdemeanors.
Authorities say that he gave his pregnant girlfriend Darshana Patel, 39, also from India, a drink spiked with RU-486, a drug used to induce abortions. Patel was freed from jail on December 3 after his friends pooled their resources to come with $750,000 in cash needed to spring him from jail. As conditions of the bond, Patel was ordered to check in at the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department Day Report Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“I did not learn that he was gone until I got a call from the sheriff’s department on Friday,” his lawyer Thomas Zoesch said, adding that he had been unable to reach Patel on his cellphone.
According to the criminal complaint, Patel told detectives that he contacted someone in India about how to end a pregnancy. The person suggested the pills, which Patel said he had shipped to him from India, the complaint says. Patel is married, but he has had a relationship with Darshana at various times since 2001.
