Making a start with screen presence

This is idiot-box diplomacy, so to say. Almost as if setting the stage for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Beijing, China is believed to have given Zee Telefilms the nod to air its programme in that country. In fact, much of the business discussions will take place on the margins of the PM’s visit. Much of this is based on reports of a growing demand for Bollywood films in China, and given that Beijing allows screening of only around 50 foreign films annually, the channel is a good option. Movies are one thing, but news another. So no news content will be allowed. Also, the buzz is that the entertainment channel will be permitted only in hotels. In return, of course, CCTV—China’s state-owned television network—can now enter India. But unlike its neighbour, New Delhi is not clamping any restrictions on the channel. This means it is free to telecast news and information programmes.
