PATNA, MARCH 11 After its bid to win over the sympathy of farmers through the loan waiver, the UPA Government is now all set to woo OBCs and Dalits. The Central Government will bring two Bills during the current session of Parliament seeking to end dereservation of quotas in jobs for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) that remain vacant.

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan told reporters here on Tuesday that a decision to bring the Bill in the current month itself was taken at a meeting of the Group of Ministers under the leadership of Foreign Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday. To ensure strict implementation, the Bill also proposes legal action against those officers who flout the rule, the minister said. He said that disregard of the rule will be taken seriously and treated as a cognisable offence.

In real terms, the Bill proposes to make it compulsory that the quotas for OBCs, SCs and STs are filled by candidates of these communities. Political leaders championing the cause of these sections had alleged time and again that the quotas in jobs were not filled by the appointing authorities citing that there were not enough deserving candidates.

They have also alleged that the vacant seats were later converted into general category.
