NEW DELHI, MARCH 19 : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has stayed the execution of Sarabjit Singh by a month, until April 30, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told Parliament today.

“We have achieved partial success and we will continue our efforts to save his life,” Mukherjee told Lok Sabha.

He said the Indian High Commission in Islamabad had been informed by the Pakistan Foreign Office that the President had postponed Sarabjit’s execution by a month. Earlier, April 1 had been fixed as the date for his hanging.

Mukherjee’s announcement came a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the House that India had taken up the matter at the highest level.

Sarabjit’s sister, Dalbir Kaur, meanwhile, has submitted a clemency plea to the Pakistan High Commission, seeking pardon for her brother.

She has also requested the Pakistani authorities to allow her to travel to Pakistan and meet Sarabjit.
