Silicon Valley: : Tata’s Computational Research Laboratories (CRL) has joined hands with Internet giant Yahoo for research in cloud computing technologies that allow users to run programme from remote data centers instead of using a local computer. Under the agreement announced on Tuesday, CRL will give access to its supercomputer, which is among the five fastest in the world. One of the first in terms of size and scale of the machine, the supercomputer will be available to academic institutions in India for the first time. The cloud structure will help process and organise the growing amount of data on the Web, and assist projects such as genome research or language translation software. “We are excited to partner with Yahoo to advance cloud computing research in India as it opens up a new arena of exciting opportunities,” said Gautam Shroff, member of the steering committee of CRL. “We are initiating dialogue with leading Indian academic institutions to collaborate on research using cloud computing,” he added. The CRL supercomputer has more processors than any supercomputer currently available for cloud computing research.
