• Abhinav Kumar’s views on CPC (‘The Other Caste System’) bring into focus some issues with an impact on India’s IPS officers. Our system calls for a level playing field where both police officers and the public should contribute to the nation building activities without fear or favour. If that is to happen, the obstacles faced by the police in conducting impartial investigations can be avoided, thereby allowing power to go hand in hand with responsibility. And, at the same time, the Indian Police Service should be given an autonomous character. Experienced IPS officers should suggest ways and means of improving all aspects of policing in the country in the public interest. The Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations cannot mitigate the silent grievances and miseries of the majority of our countrymen in various walks of life. What Indian citizens want to hear from all wings of the Government is a plan of action to eliminate the problems faced by Indians.

Every inch a leader

• This refers to Dibyesh Anand’s ‘So many ways to Tibet’. The world should know that the Dalai Lama’s moral as well as political leadership remains untarnished. The present crisis in Tibet has not changed that in any way. The Tibetan government in exile too has stood by the Dalai Lama, and it is highly commendable. The international community should ignore the allegation that the Tibetan government in exile is “uncreative and bankrupt”. In fact, there is obvious evidence to the contrary: the fact that, during the Tibetan crisis, the Dalai Lama and his government received a successful visit from Nancy Pelosi — only to address the situation in Tibet — should prove that the Tibetan government in exile will do its utmost for the Tibetan cause.

An honourable deal

• The Sixth Pay Commission should be congratulated on recommending a much-needed 40 per cent hike in the emoluments of government employees. Such a hike was most necessary in the defence services, since almost 1000 officers leave the forces every year due to the poor pay and long work hours. However, despite the present salaries, defence personnel don’t complain about what the government has to offer them. It is their dignity, pride and self-respect that inspire them to be contented.
