Srinagar, April 3: With the arrest of Junaid-ul-Islam, the J&K Police netted a high-profile catch on Thursday as the militant has been the face of Hizbul-Mujahideen for the past five years in Kashmir and its only voice on everything from attacks on security forces to Indo-Pak politics. The arrest comes at a time when the indigenous militant outfit has received a series of jolts over the last couple of weeks.

“Junaid’s arrest is a big success,” says Deputy Inspector General of J&K Police, north Kashmir, B Srinivas. Junaid-ul-Islam, however, prefers to keep quiet on the issue.

Junaid’s actual name is Abdul Khaliq Dar. He hails from Khanpora in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. After graduating from Baramulla College in 1985, he did his post graduation in Arabic from Kashmir University in 1987.

His first brush with politics came due to his close affinity with Jamat-e-Islami.

DIG Srinivasan said that Junaid exfiltrated to Pakistan in early 1990, where he was involved in motivating the youth.

Though the DIG says Junaid was arrested in the wee hours on Thursday from Srinagar, sources reveal he was arrested by Handwara police from Karannager locality of the city three days ago.
