McGrath keen to take on Warne, Sachin
New Delhi, April 10 : Glenn McGrath held centrestage at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Monday as the Delhi Daredevils handed their prize-fighter over to the media one day after he landed in the city. And the former Australian fast bowler obliged, speaking on the exciting contests the league will throw up among other things.
“I’m looking forward to playing against Shane Warne. It will be an interesting encounter. I have played with him, but now I will be playing against him and it will be altogether a different challenge for me,” he said.
He was also happy to be a part of this league, saying tournaments such as these gave players like him, who are past their prime, a chance to still be affiliated with the game.
McGrath, who had had a memorable on-field rivalry with Sachin Tendulkar, felt that the Mumbai Indian would have an edge over him in the Twenty20 format. “Without doubt I am looking forward to bowl to Sachin again. I have enjoyed my whole career bowling to some of the world’s best batsmen. I’ve had some interesting battles with Sachin in the last 10 years and it has been 50-50 between us till now. But it might be 51-49 in Sachin’s favour now as T20 is more of a batsmen’s game,” McGarth said.
The 38-year-old said that he was surprised and disappointed by the fact that many of his former team mates in the current Australian team were willing to end their careers to play in the cash-rich Twenty 20 leagues in India.
“I read the report today, and it revealed some startling figures. I am surprised that so many Australian players want to quit international cricket for the Indian Premier League or the Indian Cricket League, but I would be disappointed if they put these leagues before the country,” said McGrath.
He was also in favour of the ICC including the IPL in their Future Tours Programme. “That will mean the game is not affected,” he said.
