New Delhi: : Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav announced on Thursday that the Railways would now only load foodgrains procured by the Food Corporation of India and state governments and not those procured by private entrepreneurs. He also said that private players would not be allowed into the core sector of Indian Railways.

“I want to inform the House that barring foodgrains procured by the FCI and state governments, wheat procured by private contractors will not be loaded in railway wagons,” he declared during his reply to discussions on Demands for Grants passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

He said that the Railways was ready to provide any help to bring relief to people from inflation. It is the duty of state governments to carry out the task of procurement. He said Railways has received a huge number of indents from the FCI and have begun loading foodgrains in the wagons.

“We will not allow dearth of wheat in any part of the country. There has been enough production of wheat in India including Bihar. State governments should ensure enough procurement to meet the needs of their people,” said the minister thanking the Delhi Government for launching a drive against hoarding.

The Lok Sabha also passed the Appropriation (Railways) Bill. Pointing that Indian Railways had a cash surplus of Rs 69,000 crore, Yadav exuded confidence that it would reach around Rs 1,00,000 crore by the end of the UPA Government’s tenure.
