NEW DELHI, APRIL 17: The Union Health Ministry on Thursday gave two years’ time to all medical colleges for implementing the proposed 27 per cent quota, asking them to enforce 17 per cent this year and the rest next year.

Amongst the 12 medical institutions which met on Thursday, AIIMS and Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) expressed their willingness to implement the quota in one go — this year itself. Giving them the go-ahead, the Union Health Minister asked them to come out with their “economic requirement” — providing the infrastructure needed, contractual appointments for teaching faculty and all other requisites for the implementation of the proposed quota. “The medical colleges have been given 15 days for formulating the projections,” said a ministry official.

The ministry also allowed medical institutions to go for private accommodation, if need be, to accommodate more students. “Funds will be provided to them to create infrastructure in two years’ time. However, those who have said they will be able to do it this year itself, are welcome to do so. AIIMS and Safdarjung have space and can do it in one go,” added the official.

Various Government colleges, including AIIMS and Safdarjung, have been directed to start nursing colleges with at least 200 seats from this year. The medical colleges affiliated with universities have been told to get in touch with their respective vice-chancellors to come up with new recruitments.

Those who attended the meeting included officials from the Indian Medical Council, AIIMS director Dr TD Dogra, joint secretaries, and representatives from dental colleges and other medical institutes like VIMHANS and PGI, Chandigarh.

VMMC has agreed to increase its seats from 100 to 154. “We have enough space to increase our seats without affecting the general seats,” said VMMC principal Prof Jagdish Prasad.

AIIMS at present has 50 MBBS seats and is ready to increase it by 77 this year.
