Shillong, April 18: Agatha K Sangma, the youngest child of former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP leader Purno A Sangma, wants to contest by-election from the Tura Lok Sabha seat. Educated in India and the UK, Agatha is a lawyer by profession.

The by-election is scheduled for May 22. The seat fell vacant after Sangma resigned on being elected to the state Assembly in March 3 elections. Two of his sons have also entered the Assembly.

State NCP president W R Kharlukhi told The Indian Express on Friday that Sangma’s daughter is one of the aspirants for the party ticket. “The party will meet on Monday to take a decision on the issue,” he said. Another prominent aspirant, who has applied for the party ticket, is former Meghalaya Board of School Education secretary I K Sangma. Kharlukhi said the names of all aspirants would be thoroughly discussed in the meeting.

Sangma is the chairman of the State Planning Board and according to an agreement between the UDP and the NCP, he will take over as the CM from Donkupar Roy after two-and-half-years. His sons — Conrad and James — had also contested and won the recent Assembly election. Conrad is finance and power minister in the state Government. James is a parliamentary secretary, a post equivalent to minister of state.
