LUCKNOW, APRIL 18: After spending a night at the house of a Dalit, which annoyed UP Chief Minister Mayawati, All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday sat on a dharna in front of the Jhansi Divisional Commissioner’s official residence, virtually forcing Commissioner P Jagmohan to meet about 100 villagers accompanying him and hear their problems.

Gandhi sat there for about 20 minutes in scorching heat. He was in Bundelkhand region, comprising parts of Madhya Pradesh and UP, for the last two days and met villagers, particularly farmers, tribals and Dalits.

On Friday morning, Gandhi visited a few villages, including Ghinsauli and Badaura under Jhansi’s Babina tehsil. The villagers told him about the poor implementation of various schemes, including NREGS. They also complained about the shortage of drinking water in the area. Rahul then offered to take them to the Jhansi Divisional Commissioner and led them to the Commissioner’s residence.

As Friday was a holiday on account of Mahavir Jayanti, the Commissioner was reluctant to meet the villagers at his residence. “He sent a message that he could meet Rahul and a selected number of delegates. But Rahul refused to accept the condition and conveyed that he would meet (him) with all farmers. After some time, the administration accepted Rahul’s demand,” a source said.

This is the first time that Rahul Gandhi has resorted to such direct action against the state government. At UPCC’s Kanpur convention recently, Sonia Gandhi had told Congressmen that they should be willing to go to jail if the party was to grow in UP. She had also said that, if necessary, Rahul would also go to jail.
