President Pratibha Patil’s first foreign tour might not have been a huge success diplomatically, but for her husband, Devisingh Shekhawat, the trip is bound to be a memorable one. Shekhawat got the opportunity to celebrate his birthday mid-air when the President’s entourage was flying from Mexico City to Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city. Shekhawat had the entire entourage for guests and these included Union Minister Vilas Muttemwar and some Mexican officials accompanying the President. While the Mexicans offered their greetings in Spanish, Muttemwar went lyrical, singing Bar bar din yeh aaye...tum jiyo hajaron saal for the President's spouse. It was probably his way ofmaking up for a near diplomatic faux pas he almost made the previous day when he went missing from a Mexico City function where he was supposed to address a joint meeting of industry chambers. It is not known whether Muttemwar had gone sightseeing or shopping, but he managed to arrive just in the nick of time to save the blushes for Indian officials.
