Srinagar, April 23:: Security forces on Wednesday eliminated two top militants of Hizbul Mujahideen - both self-styled commanders of the outfit - in an encounter in Baramulla district.

The militants were killed in an encounter with police and army at Khwaja bagh in Baramulla this morning, SSP Anand Jain said.

He said police received specific information regarding the presence of militants in Khawaja bagh area following which a joint operation was launched.

Tanveer Ahmed Zargar alias Tana Khan and Imtiyaz Khan alias Nayeem were killed in the encounter.

Tanveer was functioning as district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen and Imtiyaz was his deputy, he said adding that two civilians were also injured during the operation.

The duo was involved in a number of IED blasts besides killing of civilians and security force personnel in and around Baramulla. They were also involved in the killing of Congress leader Mohammad Azhar Kakroo alias Jan Kakroo, he added.

Security forces have achieved major successes against the Hizb over the past couple of months, killing or arresting nearly a dozen top commanders of the outfit.
