Chandigarh, April 23 There is something about the way he smiles. A few years back, when Glenn McGrath fired a barb at the West Indian vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan after being hit for 21 runs in two overs in a Test at Antigua, Sarwan stood his ground. On Wednesday, as the rest of the Kings XI Punjab team busied themselves with fielding drills, Sarwan, the latest to join the team, began with a catching drill with Piyush Chawla.

And, when that was over, he flashed a smile reminiscent of the one he had for McGrath during that tour. “I am looking forward to playing McGrath on Sunday,” Sarwan said, and spoke about the IPL season.

On McGrath

McGrath is a world-class bowler and I think, even after retirement, he can give batsmen around the world a tough time. Though we had a go on the field, but off it we have always been friends. This time we have to deal with Mohammad Asif and Farveez Maharoof apart from facing McGrath.

On Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is the most calm person I have ever seen on a Cricket field — whether he is captain or not. The way he led after the first Test loss against Sri Lanka was commendable. He understands the players well.

The Stanford League vs IPL

Both have been good for the game. I captained Guyana in the Stanford Twenty20 league this year and it was a fine experience. Stanford League has a huge following in the Caribbean and the way the IPL is progressing, I guess it will follow the same path. The game needs to be taken to new venues. It will give a chance to domestic players to play with the best cricketers in the world.

On Kings XI Punjab

I am not sure about my role in the team but I guess it revolves around Yuvraj Singh. It will be a good opportunity to play alongside Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth. We also have players like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene and I feel it will be a great opportunity to play alongside them. I am sure coach Tom Moody will use all players wisely.

On what makes IPL different

The best thing about IPL is that you get a chance to share the dressing room with players from different backgrounds. We will understand each other’s game and more mind games will come into play with players learning different tactics.
