Groin injury puts Gayle in doubt

Kolkata, April 23: Shah Rukh Khan’s biggest catch at the Indian Premier League auctions, Chris Gayle, finally joined the Kolkata Knight Riders camp today, but a huge question mark remains over the left-hander’s participation in the coming matches. Gayle was ruled out of the first two matches of Knight Riders’s campaign after the West Indies batsman picked up a serious groin injury during the St. Lucia one-day match against Sri Lanka days before the Twenty20 championship got underway.

After missing out on the first two matches in Bangalore and Kolkata, Gayle finally managed to catch up with Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Ponting & Co. That Gayle is still not fit to get down to outdoor action was evident from the fact that he accompanied the Riders to the Eden Gardens for a routine practice session, but chose to stay back in the dressing room.

Sources revealed that he is unlikely to recover fully for the next couple of matches. It was also learnt that coach John Buchanan, trainer Adrian Le Roux and physio Andrew Leipus will make Gayle undergo a series of fitness tests over the next couple of days before taking a final decision on the Windies opener. Said the source: “It’s not exactly an official fitness test. His condition will be assessed over the next two days. So, it’s an open call. But it looks unlikely that he would recover in time for the next match.”

The Knight Riders will fly down to Chennai on Friday for their third match slated for April 26.
