Pak Govt ready to reinstate deposed judges
Islamabad, April 25: : A committee of the PPP and PML-N finalised a proposal for reinstating members of Pakistan's superior judiciary who were sacked by President Pervez Musharraf though it was not immediately clear if the judges would be restored within the deadline of April 30.
The Pakistan People's Party and PML-N, the main players in the country's ruling coalition, had committed themselves to reinstating the deposed judges within 30 days of coming to power.
However, they have grappled in recent weeks to resolve differences on this contentious issue. The committee comprising senior leaders of the PPP and PML-N finalised recommendations for reinstating the deposed judges during its third meeting today.
The panel includes PPP leaders Rehman Malik, the advisor to the Prime Minister on interior affairs, Raza Rabbani, and PML-N leaders and federal ministers Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Khwaja Asif.
Law Minister Farooq Naek, who is also a member of the committee, told reporters that the proposal for restoring the judges will be presented to PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for their approval.
"Mr Zardari and Mian Nawaz Sharif will make an announcement after taking a joint decision within the next couple of days," Naek said. He refused to give details of the proposal, only saying that it would satisfy all stakeholders and the public.
Petroleum Minister Khwaja Asif said the PPP and PML-N were trying their best to meet the April 30 deadline for reinstating the judges who were sacked by Musharraf for not endorsing last year's emergency.
"Our position is absolutely clear and there is no doubt about it. But if progress is being made, then (the judges could be reinstated a few days after April 30)," Asif said.
The PPP and PML-N had earlier said a resolution would be passed by the National Assembly to reinstate the judges.
However, the current session of the Assembly was prorogued on Friday. Asif said the lower house of parliament could be reconvened within a short space of time once the resolution is finalised.
Meanwhile, PML-N senior vice president Javed Hashmi told a news conference in Karachi that the deposed judges must be reinstated by April 30. "Now only six days are left for the judges to be restored," he said.
He was also of the view that the judges could be restored through a simple executive order. Hashmi said there would be no political and economic stability in the country if the judges were not reinstated.
