Varsity inquiry against DIG accused of cheating
GANDHINAGAR, APRIL 28 : The Gujarat University (GU) has asked the Unfair Means Committee to investigate the charges of cheating against IPS officer Rajnish Rai. Currently posted as DIG (State Crime Records Bureau) in Gandhinagar, Rai was allegedly caught cheating during his first year LLB exam last week.
To add to the controversy, the exam invigilator and the college principal gave contradictory statements before a high-level committee. While the supervisor who had reportedly caught Rai cheating put the blame on the college principal for not booking a cheating case, the principal distanced herself claiming it was the supervisor’s job to do so.
There are other complications as well. While the invigilator says Rai had a foot-rule that had exam material scribbled on it, this evidence has apparently been destroyed by the college authorities. GU Vice-Chancellor Parimal Trivedi said the varsity would investigate the culpability of the college administration in letting off some students despite the fact that they had been caught cheating. “We are taking this issue seriously. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence and the committee will look into it,” he said. The fact that the vice-chancellor rushed to Gandhinagar to collect evidence hints at the possibility of the State Government monitoring the developments.
Meanwhile, Rai too is demanding a speedy inquiry. “Treat me like a normal student and carry the inquiry in a fair manner. It is important that everyone knows if they have any evidence of unfair means against me. Let them show it first,” he said.
