4-yr B.Tech: IIT set to double fee to Rs 2 lakh

Posted online: Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 0038 hrs Print Email

KANPUR, April 28: After approval from the Council of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the stage is set for a near-doubling of the fee at these premier institutions.

At present, a B.Tech student has to pay Rs 13,500 as semester fee which is being raised to Rs 25,000 per semester. This takes the fee for the four-year course to Rs 2 lakh in place of the current Rs 1.08 lakh.

While raising fees, IIT-K will ensure that students already enrolled do not have to pay the increased fee. Also, there will be tuition waiver — almost 80% of the fee — for those whose annual household income is less than Rs 2 lakh, said Dean of Students Prawal Sinha. Sinha said that around a quarter of all undergraduate and postgraduate students will get financial relief. Said Assistant Registrar KV Satya Murty: “After the tuition-fee waiver, a student will barely have to pay Rs 5,000 per semester.”

The fee for the two-year M.Tech course is also being raised to Rs 25,000 per semester, so is the fee for MBA, and Master of Design course.
