New Delhi, April 29 : The Parliamentary Board of BJP is meeting here on Wednesday to discuss the simmering discontent in its Bihar unit.

According to sources, the leadership is not inclined to sacrifice its Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi at this stage, but the party brass is nevertheless concerned over the level of dissatisfaction among the party leaders over him. On Tuesday, state minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey met L K Advani and apprised him of the “high-handed ways of Modi that has allowed Nitish Kumar and the JD (U) a free run” in the state. Besides, around 15 party legislators are expected to rush to Delhi to mount pressure on the leadership.

The party leadership is willing to consider every demand short of Modi’s head, but the rebels are in no mood to relent. “We will resign as MLAs if we don’t get concrete assurances,” said a minister. The rebels are also likely to use the Lok Sabha election argument to pin down Modi. “We are being told that the Nitish Kumar-led alliance will win handsome results in the Lok Sabha elections. The JD-U will, however, do well at the cost of the BJP. A change in leadership is imperative if we are to put up a decent show," said another rebel leader.

The recent Cabinet reshuffle may have been the immediate reason, but a rebellion in the state BJP had been in offing for some time now. While Nitish has managed to create a new social constituency for his party by reworking the Mandal formula among the “Most Backwards”, rebel BJP leaders argue that Modi has failed to do anything similar for the BJP’s vote bank.

Moreover, Modi, who rose through ranks from his Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) days, has of late getting less support from Central leadership who had initially supported him. “It was the ABVP group in the party, since the days of K N Govindacharya, that supported him,” said a state party leader.
