New Delhi, May 7 President Pratibha Patil will visit the frontier areas in Jammu and Kashmir on May 23 and interact with soldiers deployed in the region. This is the first time she will be visiting the state after becoming the President in July last year.

Plans are afoot to work out the President’s final itinerary for the Valley. Patil is expected to address a Sainik Sammelan and attend a meeting with senior Army commanders in her capacity as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

The President is also expected to visit Tangdhar region, located in the Shamsabari Mountain range. Tangdhar is one of the regions which were badly affected by the earthquake that hit Kashmir in October 2005.

Patil’s visit to the Valley and meeting the soldiers posted over there holds symbolic significance. Her predecessor APJ Abdul Kalam, during his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir, had met schoolchildren, visited monasteries in Leh and Ladakh region and also addressed convocation at Jammu University, besides interacting with soldiers.
