Thiruvananthapuram, June 28
Two powerful upper class communities in Kerala on Saturday openly came out against the CPM, indicating what is in store for the party in Kerala in an election year. The Nair Service Society, an influential organisation of upper class Hindu Nair community, warned if the CPM was hesitant to change its approach towards the organisation, the party would be served with a fitting reply in the forthcoming general elections.
Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil, major archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church and president of Catholic Bishops Conference of India, in his pastoral letter has lambasted the CPM saying, “Communist agenda to brain wash a generation should be desisted at any cost.” The Cardinal has issued the letter, to be read out in all churches tomorrow, against the backdrop of the controversy over a social science textbook for class-VII.
A conflict between NSS and CPM was on for some time as the former opposed CPM leader G Sudhakaran’s bid to meddle in temple rituals and customs in his capacity as the Temple Affairs’ Minister.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Vithayathil has exhorted the Catholics to be cautious of communist strategies. The pastoral letter said, “All religions should be aware of the CPM-led Government’s hidden agenda to propagate atheism through text books.’’
