It must be a unique experience when former communists catch up with current ones. Ask Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who recently led a nine-member delegation comprising himself, five MPs and Lok Sabha Secretary-General P D T Achary to Bulgaria, a former member of the Soviet bloc. Chatterjee had a packed itinerary in Sophia, Liulin and other places. The hosts recounted to the delegates how popular songs of Raj Kapoor films were or how much admiration they had for Indira Gandhi. They also took Chatterjee to a school named after the former Indian prime minister. All this was fine, but the Bulgarians went ahead and organised what would have amounted to a sure sacrilege under Communist rule: they held a variety show where a girl recited verses from the Mahabharata in chaste Sanskrit. Our veteran comrade savoured it all with a smiling face.
