In line with the politburo decision taken in Delhi on Sunday, Left Front chairman and CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose on Monday raised the protest pitch against the Congress and the UPA government. Bose accused the Congress of “suppressing” facts and “misleading” the Left over the Indo-US nuke deal. Vital clauses of the deal were not disclosed to us, including the decision to go to the IAEA, Bose alleged.

The LF chairman also accused the Congress of helping communal forces in the country, besides failing to check price rise and inflation. The Left Front will launch a countrywide campaign against the Congress over these issues, he said.

Bose was speaking at the party headquarters in Alimuddin Street after a crucial Left Front meeting where the situation in Delhi was discussed in detail. “During the UPA-Left meeting in Delhi in October and November last year, the Congress Government had said something else on the nuke deal. Now they are saying something else. Last year, they did not tell us that it was mandatory for the Centre to go to IAEA, but now Congress say it’s mandatory. This is grossly wrong,” Bose said.

Bose said the views that emerged in the meeting has been communicated to their counterparts in Delhi where a final decision will be taken soon. “We are also talking among ourselves. While CPI(M) held talks with CPI on Sunday, the former spoke to Forward Bloc on Monday. Another meeting is scheduled between CPI(M) and RSP on Tuesday. An all-important Left coordination committee meeting is expected to be held in Delhi on July 3 or 4.”

The meeting also made clear the Left’s strategy of attacking the Congress on communalism and price hike as the n-deal seemingly lacks popular appeal. “There were a number of instances in recent years when communal forces have raised their heads in different parts of the country, be it in Gujarat, Karnataka or Madhya Pradesh. But the Congress did not hit the streets against such forces. Attempts are being made to provide opportunity and undue advantages to communal forces. We will campaign against this,” said Bose.

On inflation, Bose said, “The situation has never been so in the past 13 years. The UPA Government has failed to check inflation. Instead, they are pushing for the nuke deal.”
