Pune The atmosphere was not exactly buzzing with excitement on Monday in Koregaon Bhima in Pune district. It was the last day for banks to declare the names of those who qualified for the Rs 71,000-crore loan waiver, but drew a lukewarm response from most farmers.

Shivaji Dabhade, 50, didn’t believe the grant would alleviate his problems significantly. Although he had taken an agricultural loan of Rs 2. 30 lakh, only Rs 20,000 was waived.

“I had been repaying the loan regularly despite my family problems, and what I have received cannot be termed a big help. Still, it has provided some relief.”

On the other hand, Alka Ghavate, 40, who grows sugarcane and onions on her farm expressed wider concerns.

“Though the loan waiver will help my family to some extent, the Government should provide sufficient electricity supply instead of imposing load-shedding when there is a real need. Besides, seeds, fertilisers and manures are either not easily available or are sold at exorbitant prices.”
