The doctor is in

I am suffering from writer’s cramp for the last 7-8 years. Is there any remedy? The other problem I am facing is that I have lost the sense of smell. The doctor says it may be due to very small nasal polyp that I have. I am 69 and do not suffer from any other age-related health problems. Please suggest a treatment.

Dr P N Renjen, senior consultant, neurologist, Indraprastha Apollo hospital, says:

Writer’s cramp was initially thought to be an occupational hazard but now it is thought to be an early manifestation of Parkinson’s Disease. You should consult a neurologist. It can be treated by medicines.

Dr Aru Handa, senior consultant, ENT, Moolchand Medicity, says:

Loss of smell can occur because of many reasons. There could be some obstruction in the nasal passage so air does not reach the olfactory area of the nose, which is the area of the smell. This blockage could be due to any swelling, or a polyp. It can sometimes happen after an attack of cold and the sense of smell may take a few weeks to come back. You should get yourself examined by an ENT specialist to rule out any such possibility. Sometimes even radiological tests (CT scan) may also be needed to look for these swellings.
