Srinagar, July 4: Six Army personnel and a militant were killed on Friday in an ongoing gun battle near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector. The encounter began on Monday evening, when the Army foiled a major infilitration attempt.

“Six Army men, including three Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), were killed in the encounter on the LoC at Tanghdar,” said Army spokesman Colonel Uma Maheswar. “In recent months, this is one of the biggest infiltration attempts made by the militants, and the deadliest encounter that has taken place on the LoC.”

According to Maheswar, 12 militants have been killed since Monday. “The Army columns were combing the area to track down other militants, when they came under fire on Friday,” he said. “The exchange of fire is still going on, and there is the possibility of more militants being present in the surrounding areas.”

Officials said a heavily armed group of militants had sneaked into the Valley from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Monday, after cutting the barbed wire fencing at the LoC near the Army’s Roshni post. Eleven militants and one JCO were killed in the initial firefight.

Maheswar said the identity of the slain militants had not been ascertained yet, and some of the bodies have not been recovered. “The area where the encounter took place is located on a ridge. So far, the Army has only been able to retrieve bodies of six militants,” he said.

Earlier in June, Army personnel had killed seven infiltrators in the same sector near Kulhara and Sonapindi Gali posts. On Thursday, the Army chief, General Deepak Kapoor, had said the killing of militants on LoC indicated that attempts to destabilise the situation in the Valley are being made from across the border.
