Chennai, July 5 Vanniyar Sangam President ‘Kaduvatti’ Guru, whose controversial statements against the DMK leadership led the party to sever its alliance with the PMK, was arrested on Saturday from his Kaduvatti village home in Ariyalur district, police said.

Police said Guru was arrested on a complaint filed by one Gunasekaran, a one-time arrack seller and a PMK member. “He has been arrested on several counts, including attempt to murder — a non-bailable offence,” a police officer said.

“Gunasekaran, bootlegger in Kaduvetti, gave up the illegal trade and joined PMK. Guru promised to help him get the money from the Government under a scheme for those who give up the illegal trade. But Guru pocketed the money,” the official said.

Gunasekaran told the police that Guru, along with three others, assaulted him on April 30 when he asked for the money and told them that if he didn’t get it he would join the AIADMK.

The police picked up Guru around 5 am and presented him before the Perambalur Judicial Court. He has been remanded to judicial custody till July 17 and has been lodged at the Central Prison in Tiruchirapalli.

“I have been falsely implicated in this case for political reasons,” Guru said.

Ramadoss has termed the arrest as a ‘murder of democracy’, though he has urged party workers to stay calm.
