New Delhi, July 5: Gagan Narang won gold and recorded a world record score of 704.3 in an Olympic test event of the men’s air rifle at Hanover today. The score was 1.2 more than the earlier mark of 703.1 set by Austrian shooter Thomas Farnik in the World Cup finals held at Garnada in 2006.

Gagan shot a score of 599 in the qualifications and followed it up with 105.3 in the final round. In the sixth qualification series, Gagan shot a 9.9 which prevented him from a perfect score of 600/600.

According to reports, national coach Sunny Thomas was pleased with Narang’s performance. He said: “By any standard, this is a superb performance and above the world record score.”

The coach also said that he was extremely happy with the way Narang was training for the Beijing Games. “There is a lot of difference between shooting a high score in a training session and doing so in a competition, particularly when you have for company some of the best in business from around the world. But one thing I am sure about Narang is that his confidence will get a big boost after today’s performance,” he added.
