Will Dhoni sit out for Lanka tour?
Karachi, July 6: With strong rumours floating around about Mahendra Singh Dhoni wanting to take a break from the Sri Lanka tour, the Indian skipper was asked for a clarification as he addressed the media after the Asia Cup loss. “You will get to know about it in the next couple of days,” he said. When pressed further, he maintained, “When’s the selection committee meeting? You’ll get to know.”
It must be recalled that Dhoni had complained about the hectic Asia Cup itinerary and coach Gary Kirsten in his column has said that India’s ODI captain desperately needs a break. The India Test squad leaves for Lanka on July 15 and will be playing three Tests and five one-dayers. Since July last year, Dhoni has virtually played non-stop cricket. The tour to England and Ireland was followed by the T20 championship in South Africa.
This was followed by two home series against Australia and Pakistan. Within days of these home series, Dhoni was on the flight to Australia for the three-month long tour.
Dhoni returned from Australia to play the three-match Test series against South Africa. The end of the South African series coincided with the start of the 44-day Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dhoni had no respite since he lead Chennai Super Kings to the final. And it was during the Asia Cup, that followed the Bangladesh tri-series, that Dhoni complained of the hectic international schedule.
Though Dhoni doesn’t have any fitness problems but the mental strain on the skipper is showing. And there are many in the team who say that he might take a break.
