Shillong, July 7 Though the meeting between Meghalaya Power Minister Conrad K Sangma and the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo Peoples’ (FKJGP) remained inconclusive over the six power deals signed by the previous government, Sangma said that the present Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) Government will keep the interests of the state in mind before deciding on whether to cancel the deals or not.

After defeating the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) in the recent Assembly elections, the MPA served non-operational notices to six private power developers asking them not to proceed with the power projects signed with the previous Government till a final decision was taken by the present government.

Sangma met the members of the two organisations on Monday as the latter were demanding the scrapping of the power deals. In face of the protests, the Government constituted a high-power committee to study and accordingly suggest what the government should do.

The committee headed by Meghalaya Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee has submitted its 160-page report.
