NEW DELHI, JULY 7 : The SP parliamentary party on Tuesday will explain its turnaround on the nuclear deal to the party MPs and also reaffirm its support to the Government on the issue.

The top SP leadership — Mulayam Singh Yadav, Amar Singh and Ramgopal Yadav — will strive to allay apprehensions about the deal being anti-Muslim. They will use the pronouncements of Muslim clerics who have said the deal has nothing to do with religion.

While Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav will tell the MPs what they were briefed by the National Security Advisor (NSA), the party leadership will also discuss former President A P J Abdul Kalam’s “national interest” argument.

Besides, the party leadership will further pit communalism against imperialism. “Communalism, represented by the likes of Advani and Modi, is a bigger danger than imperialism, represented by president Bush whose term is getting over soon,” has been Amar Singh’s refrain.

Given the anti-Bush sentiment in its minority support base, the party MPs will be apprised of the fact that President Bush’s term is set to end and the deal is likely to be concluded by the next President.

The party will address fears of the disgruntled elements about their renomination for the next elections. Besides, the party leadership will ask the MPs to get ready for the elections by keeping a watch on the preparation of electoral photo identity cards in their respective constituencies, where it fears the ruling BSP may get their supporters off the rolls.
