A.j. reb materi’s famous quote, “So many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health” is very relevant for the times we live in, for the simple reason that we gobble down fattening foods during work. Gone are the days of fixed lunch breaks, as we nibble snacks through the day, biting into a samosa or bread pakora or patty as we work on our desks or ‘refresh’ ourselves in the swanky cafeteria. The aroma of paranthas, burgers, pizzas and the sight of cakes, pastries or gulab jamuns throw us off our control, despite no intentions of eating. Since almost every day is a celebration in office with birthdays, meetings and conferences, it’s high time we evaluated ‘office party’ foods.

Nonchalance about what we eat at work is a recipe for disaster. Consumption of foods high on trans-fats and sugar along with decreased physical activity and lack of exercise make up for a lethal combo, increasing our risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
The quality of what we eat and drink at work directly impacts our productivity. Snacking on sugary foods and drinks, which the body quickly digests, causes a short surge in energy but ultimately leaves the body more tired. Besides sluggishness, it also results in low immunity, low endurance and a decrease in work productivity for mental and physical tasks, which can drop by as much as 30 per cent.

Employees spend half of their waking hours at work and in this respect, the office represents a logical place to ensure proper nutrition. With initiatives where companies have provided healthy food choices with fruit and vegetable breaks and access to physical activity, employees have reported a change in their eating preferences, many have lost weight and now look forward to healthier food options.
So, next time plan your party around smart foods prepared from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
