New Delhi, July 11: In response to reports that the CBI has sought permission from the Supreme Court to prosecute Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in the disproportionate assets case, the UP Government, in a press release, has come out with a host of allegations against the investigative agency.

The UP Government has termed the filing of the counter-affidavit by the CBI a “political conspiracy” in keeping with the announcement made by Mayawati, while withdrawing support from the Central Government, that the CBI was being “pressurised” to implicate her.

Mayawati had, on a previous occasion, announced that the then NDA Government also tried to pressurise her by misusing the CBI in 2003. “Several legal experts believe that filing of the counter-affidavit by the CBI, just a few days before the date when the UPA Government is expected to prove its majority on the floor of the House, casts a doubt on the action of the CBI,” the press release states.

The conditional support extended by Mayawati’s arch rivals, the Samajwadi Party, to the Congress is also cited as one of the reasons for questioning the CBI’s actions. “The SP is believed to have sought action against the BSP supremo, who is a sworn opponent of the SP,” the release says.

According to the UP Government, the CBI’s filing of the affidavit in the SC 17 days before the due date of July 28, even though the case has been pending with the agency for years, is motivated by the factors listed above.

The CBI’s decision to circulate copies of the affidavit to the media “even before its submission to the SC” has also drawn the ire of the UP Government. “Legal experts believe that all these actions cast doubt on the working of the CBI and substantiate the views expressed by Mayawati in her plea before the Supreme Court,” the release adds.
