CHENNAI, JULY 14: Taking on the Goliaths is the political flavour of this season. Days after PMK announced that it was working at a coalition sans the two major political parties in Tamil Nadu, DMK and AIADMK, actor Sarath Kumar, founder of the nascent AISMK, said his party was looking for a third front in the state in the run-up to the next Lok Sabha elections.

Talking to reporters during his 54th birthday celebrations in Chennai on Monday, Sarath said his party was looking to lead an alliance “with parties that share a common vision” without DMK or AIADMK.

“AISMK has identified 22 constituencies where we would field candidates for the coming general elections,” he said. This would be the first time the party is taking part in the election after its formation recently.

Fellow actor and DMDK founder Vijayakanth’s stated plan is to forge an alliance other than the two major Dravidian parties.

The AISMK is now the third party that is looking to forge a new alliance that can take on both DMK and AIADMK, something that has not been tried successfully so far.

Curiously, the Congress, now part of the DMK alliance, fits in the plans of all three fronts. Vijayakanth had held discussions with AICC in-charge Arun Kumar while PMK founder S Ramadoss went a step further by announcing that it was looking at an alliance led by the Congress.

Sarath Kumar, a member of the Nadar community, was a DMK MP before quitting the party to form his own outfit.
