LUCKNOW, JULY 14 : In his narco-analysis test, prime accused in the murder of Kanpur-based gastroenterologist Dr Anurag Mittal has reportedly confessed to five more murders.

The accused, Brijesh Kumar Verma, a resident of Unnao, had reportedly confessed to have killed the doctor on board Shram Shakti Express on August 28. In his confession, he listed the trains on which he carried out the five murders. He gave the details of the places where he threw the bodies of the victim. Verma, however, was unaware of the name of the victims.

Investigating officer, Inspector Dileep Kumar Mittal of Government Railway Police (GRP), Aligarh Cantonment, said he has sent the report to his seniors and also to the districts where Verma said he had thrown the bodies.

According to Dileep Kumar, the trains on which Verma claimed to have committed murders are Kanyakumari Express, Kalka Mail and Amritsar Express. Verma threw the bodies out of the train so that the crimes looked like accidents.

According to the postmortem report, Dr Mittal was strangled to death. The doctor was reportedly carrying Rs 1 lakh, US $ 8,000 and other valuables which were found missing. Failing to solve the case, the Government handed over the case to the Special Task Force (STF) from the GRP.

During the investigation, the police found that Dr Mittal’s cell phone was still in use. The STF also came to know that one B K Singh was travelling in the same coach along with Dr Mittal. From the railway record, they found that Singh was a resident of Rajajipuram in Lucknow, but did not find him in the same address.

Working on these clues, STF arrested Verma from Chowk area of Lucknow on September 1. It recovered two mobile phones, including the one belonging to Dr Mittal, and US $ 8,000 dollars, looted from Dr Mittal.

Even after Verma’s arrest, there were several unanswered questions, said Kumar. “It was not clear how he came to know that Dr Mittal was carrying a large amount of money. Why did he kill the doctor and who else were with him?” said Dileep Kumar.

The police, therefore, obtained permission from the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Aligarh for the narco-analysis test.
