Kathmandu, July 14: The Nepal Constituent Assembly on Tuesday fixed July 19 as the date for election of the first president of republican Nepal.

The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (CPN-M) said while it was not going to stake claim for the post of President, under no circumstances it will support the candidature of Prime Minister

G P Koirala of Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.

Reacting to the Maoist stand, the Prime Minister’s nephew Shekhar Koirala said, “It is not for the Maoists to decide who will be out candidate. In case, they are reluctant to support Koirala as the President, Nepali Congress will opt to sit in the Opposition.”

With Nepali Congress adamant upon fielding Koirala as the President, the Maoists tried to forge an alliance with the UML. However, the reservation over Madhav Nepal’s candidature came as a shocker to the Left unity. “If there is no consensus or understanding on the President’s choice, the majority vote in the Constituent Assembly will settle the issue,” Maoist leaders said.

Maoist chief Prachanda who has already staked claim to form the Government will have to prove his majority, but with the Left unity still not achieved, political arithemetic is still unclear in the Himalayan republic that went to polls to elect a Constituent Assembly this April.
