‘One is reminded of the East India Company’

Posted online: Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 0252 hrs Print Email

The UPA government has been reduced to a minority government. Having accepted this, the prime minister should have quit. Even after the Samajwadi Party’s support, it remains a minority government. This debate is not about the Indo-US nuclear deal alone. The House is meeting for two days to discuss the trust vote and not the nuclear deal. Is there no issue other than the nuclear deal? Inflation is touching the 11-12 per cent figure. Price rise and farmers’ suicides are issues of grave concern.

Many states don’t have electricity in as many as 80 per cent villages. Half of the Indian states don’t have a power connection in 55 per cent villages. And you want us to believe that there’s no issue other than the nuclear deal?

The Communists have withdrawn support for certain reasons. The government must come clean on these charges. One is reminded of the East India Company in the way the US is pushing its nuclear deal.
