‘Could have been a broader debate on energy security’

I have been listening to every speech made by my honourable colleagues from the other side. Not a single speaker has been able to convince either the House or any one of us in the Government as to what exactly is objectionable in the 123 Agreement.

There are issues, which Pranab Mukherjee has very rightly pointed out. About 1.6 billion tonnes of coal is to be imported by the year 2050.

Do you know the impact it will have on global warming? What impact would it have on global prices of coal? India’s requirement of petroleum products in a year is about 135 million tonnes, of which the domestic production is 32 million tonnes. The required annual growth of petroleum products is conservatively eight to nine per cent. Last year, the government’s under recovery of petroleum products was a whopping 75,000 crore. This year, the under recovery of petroleum products even at today’s prices of 130 dollars will be more than 215 lakh thousand crore.

This discussion is being brought down to a very small and narrow level. But it could have been a much broader debate on India’s energy security.

Governments come and go. The question here is of the integrity of the government and its commitment to India’s energy security.
