Hyderabad, August 9 : Heavy rain across Andhra Pradesh in the last 20 hours has caused flash floods, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting traffic and telecommunications. At least 24 people are said to have been killed in the flash floods as several rivers and rivulets have overflown.

Hyderabad was lashed by 13 cm of rain on Friday night and was left wading in chest-deep water. At least six persons were killed in the city in wall collapses, and one youth was electrocuted in Amberpet area.

Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy called an emergency meeting to review the situation. Chief Secretary P Ramakanth Reddy recalled all officers who are on leave and district administrations launched rescue and relief operations.

Disaster Management Commissioner Ratna Prabha said besides Hyderabad, Krishna and Guntur districts were the worst affected. She put the official death toll at 16.

“Most of the deaths occurred due to wall collapses. Rivers and rivulets in Guntur and Krishna districts are flowing near the danger mark. Hyderabad city, so far, is facing the brunt of heavy rain,” she said.

The Disaster Management control room said a mother and her baby were killed when the wall of their house collapsed in Vijaywada, the police said.

Vijaywada has been experiencing heavy rain since Friday. Despite its wide roads and famed infrastructure, Hyderabad city’s stormwater drainage system proved hopelessly inadequate.
