Kerala orders Crime Branch probe into nun’s suicide

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: : The Kerala Government on Wednesday ordered the Crime Branch to probe the suicide of Catholic nun Anupa Mary, 24, at St Mary’s Convent near Thankassery in Kollam district on Monday.

The nun’s father, Pappachan, had alleged that his daughter had committed suicide due to sexual harassment by a senior nun at the same convent.

Earlier in the day, Pappachan accompanied by his relatives met Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and submitted petitions seeking an impartial probe into the incident.

Later, the CM said the investigation would be conducted by Crime Branch Superintendent P H Ashraf under the supervision of IG Harinath Mishra. He also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of the nun.

Meanwhile, the Catholic diocese of Kollam, to which the deceased nun belonged, has alleged a CPI(M) conspiracy behind the sexual harassment charges.

The nun who faced the allegation of sexual harassment was above 70. Local CPI(M) leaders were involved in the plot, the diocese claimed. The diocese has also ordered an inquiry headed by a senior priest.
