Pune, August 17: Four months ago, a group of drunken friends decapitated a corpse in a hospital morgue and made away with the head — all for the sake of a challenge thrown by other friends. They then threw the head into a canal and forgot all about it — till the law caught up with them.

The head was that of Natik Sheikh (25), a Nigdi-based autorickshaw driver, who had died of tuberculosis at Sassoon Hospital on April 2.

The Pune police’s crime branch have now solved the case with the arrest of Shoaib Sheikh (20) of the Samata Nagar slums in Lulla Nagar.

ACP (Crime) Sangramsinh Nishandar said Shoaib and two of his friends had cut off the head on April 3 over a challenge. “Shoaib, Yunus Isack Sheikh and Praveen Vishnu Waghire went to the Sassoon Hospital morgue and severed Natik’s head with a knife. They showed the head to friends and then threw it in a canal at Hadapsar. The police recovered the head from the canal.”

Police are now looking for Shoaib’s accomplices.
