Wani, who was admitted to AIIMS with severe head injuries on August 7, was in a state of coma and died at the hospital’s trauma centre.
Narrating the incident, Latif’s younger brother Mohammad Sharif said, “He was driving a truck carrying a consignment of biscuits while I was in another truck. We were passing through Kathua where the police were supposed to provide us security to cross the area safely. Suddenly the police vehicle stopped and a mob comprising around 15 to 20 people surrounded us with swords and iron rods.”
“My brother was taken out of the truck and the mob mauled him with rods and hit him on his head with stones while the policemen stood as mute spectators,” alleged Sharif.
“The army arrived in a while and they took him to Jammu, from where he was shifted to AIIMS by the J&K Government. However, my brother could not be saved due to the fatal injuries,” said Sharif.
