Additional Sessions Judge R K Yadav asked Chautala to appear before the court on September 5 and directed the investigating officer to serve the summon to him in person. A summon sent earlier was handed over to the leader’s personal secretary.
The court, however, allowed the plea by Chautala’s son Ajay Singh, who is abroad, to be exempted from personal appearance. The court also granted bail to 56 co-accused on personal and surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each.
The CBI chargesheeted Chautala, his son and 60 others after investigating the alleged recruitment scam of 3,123 junior teachers in Haryana for four years. The agency claimed it had “sufficient evidence” against them.
The CBI, which had filed an FIR on May 25, 2004 following a directive from the Supreme Court, had further claimed that prior sanction was not required to prosecute Chautala as he did not hold any constitutional post at present.
