A resolution to this effect was passed at the weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar on Wednesday. The resolution says that the CM had made repeated representations, written as well as verbal, to the Prime Minister, seeking a Presidential consent to the GUJCOC Bill.
In a joint statement issued after the Cabinet meeting, Government spokespersons Jay Narayan Vyas and Saurabh Patel said there were no adequate provisions made in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act enacted by the Centre in 2004 to deal with terrorism, and the existing laws in different states to check organised crimes vary.
Vyas said while Maharashtra and Karnataka have effective laws like MCOCA and KCOCA, a border state like Gujarat has to depend solely on the Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code.
