New Delhi: : India and the US are set to take part in the latest edition of the Malabar series of naval wargames off the western coast in October, with the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan super carrier set to lead the American flotilla.Unlike last year when close to 30 ships from five countries took part — making it the largest-ever wargame hosted by India — the latest in the Malabar series involves just over 10 warships from the two countries.

The exercise, which will also involve the USS Springfield nuclear-powered attack submarine, is focused on air-to-air operations, anti-submarine manoeuvers and cross-deck operations. It will take place in the western seaboard from October 15-24. Besides the US aircraft carrier, guided missile cruiser USS Chancellor’s Villa, guided missile destroyer USS Gridley, guided missile frigate USS Thach and two auxiliary ships USS Bridge and Decator will take part in the exercise.

With India’s sole aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, undergoing a major refit, the Indian forces will be led by a Delhi class destroyer and will include a Rajput-class missile destroyer, a Talwar class frigate and Godavari, Brahmaputra and Betwa-class ships besides a Shishumar class diesel-powered hunter submarine.

The exercise will have a significant air element with the American carrier-borne F-18 Super Hornets taking on IAF’s shored based Jaguar fighters and Sea Harriers of the Navy. Maritime Patrol TU-142M aircraft of the Indian Navy and P-3C Orions from the US Navy will provide surveillance cover for the exercise. Indian Navy Dorniers and ship-borne helicopters Sea King, Kamov and Chetak helicopters will also be present.

Last year’s wargame invited protests by the Left that called the exercise building up of a new strategic alliance between the two countries.
